For inspections, owner or installer must be on site so staff may access and review the panels. Inspection will verify the following: mechanism securing panels to the roof, truss system, alignment with manufacturers' requirements, type of wiring and how system is wire to the paneling.
Residential Inspections
Two Inspections are required for solar installation on residential properties:
- Final Structural Inspection
- Final Electrical Inspection
Commercial Inspections
Four inspections are required for solar installations on commercial properties:
- Initial Structural Inspection
- Initial Electrical Inspection
- Final Structural Inspection
- Final Electrical Inspection
Inspection Scheduling
The City of Rockford provides an online process for solar inspection scheduling through our Online Portal. Below are steps to schedule an inspection online:
- Log into Portal
- Select "Building Permits"
- Select "Building Permits" under "Look Up"
- Select "Look Up Inspections"
- Select Permit Type, Building
- Select open application
- Select date and further comments (recommended to leave contact name and number)
- Submit request for building permit
- Return to "Building Home"
- Select "Look Up Inspections"
- Select Electrical Permit
- Select open application
- Select date and further comments (recommended to leave contact name and number)
- Submit request for Building Permit
- Repeat steps for Electrical Permit
The City of Rockford's policy is to complete a solar inspection within five business days of an inspection request.
