About Fire Prevention
The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for a wide array of duties related to the prevention of fire in the community. This division includes a Division Chief, a Fire Prevention Coordinator, 2 Arson Investigators, 2 Fire Inspectors, and a secretary.

Honor Guard
The Rockford Fire Department Honor Guard represents both the Fire Department and the Firefighter's Union Local 413. The guard is comprised of 13 members who dedicate themselves to drill and ceremony etiquette while presenting the colors of the United States of America, the State of Illinois, the City of Rockford, and Local 413. The members also provide service as an honor guard in the event of an active firefighter or retired firefighter's passing.

Commercial Pre-Plans
The Rockford Fire Department has implemented an Annual Commercial Pre-Plan Program in which each individual fire company performs (30) detailed pre-plans of target hazard buildings in their still response territory.

Community Outreach
The Rockford Fire Department is responsive to the needs of the citizens of Rockford. The department reaches out to the community in many ways to prevent, educate, and respond to concerns and emergencies. These avenues include school education programs, juvenile fire setter intervention, “Home Safety Surveys”, commercial pre-plans, drowning prevention, and public education festivals.

Dive Team / Drowning Prevention
The Rockford Fire Department has a 22-member water rescue team. The team is comprised of firefighters who have completed specialized training in dive rescue procedures. The team can complete swift water, under ice and surface ice rescue, as well as general water rescue.

Evacuation Drills
In accordance with School Safety Drill Act PA-094-0600 (HB 2693) and Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning for Illinois Schools Training Project, each school is required to hold a minimum of 3 school evacuation drills each academic year.

Home Safety Surveys
Each year the Rockford Fire Department conducts Home Safety Surveys throughout the city. This program is beneficial because it allows firefighters the opportunity to meet citizens in their neighborhood and walk through residences giving free home safety inspections.

Juvenile Fire Setters Program
The Fire Prevention Bureau has a team of inspectors and investigators that reaches out to local youth that has started fires in the past. This team works with those individuals to show them the dangers of playing with fire, keeping them from such behaviors in the future.

Knox Box
Knox boxes allow the Fire Department access to your building during an emergency. The keys to the building are stored in the box and the Fire Department has a master key to gain access to the box.

Rockford Fire Explorers Post 413
Rockford Fire Explorers Post 413 offers High School students in the Rockford area, who are interested in Fire and EMS service, the opportunity to see first-hand the day-to-day operations of this profession.

School Programs
The Rockford Fire Department has active fire prevention programs for Rockford public and private school children. Our presentations are grade appropriate and last approximately 35 to 45 minutes.
